Indigenous individuals are vastly over-represented among people incarcerated in Canada. We collected extensive clinical information and outcome data from Review Board (RB) files obtained lifetime criminal records for 1800 found Not Criminally Responsible on Account of Mental Disorder (NCRMD) BC (n = 222), ON 484), QC 1094). non-Indigenous were compared (a) socio-demographic, clinical, histories; (b) index offenses; (c) processing by the RB; (d) recidivism. Compared to published rates disproportionate incarceration prisons Canada (30%), just 3.9% custody with an NCRMD finding identified as Indigenous. people, had higher substance use disorders, personality lower mood disorders at verdict came low population density neighborhoods but high homes. detained longer remained under supervision than recidivated similar rates.
